The Ferals

Have you ever seen a swarm of ferals, traveler? Not like the group we pushed off back at the Hadron Gap - a proper swarm. A "blot out the sun" swarm. A "make your peace" swarm.

The individual ferals, the ones disconnected from their hive, they're harmless. They've got guns, sure - but plenty of things on the Frontier have guns. The swarms though, they've got something going on in there that we don't. Their minds aren't quite human, aren't quite machines, they're something else entirely. An amalgamation of every bit of intelligence their hive and every hive they've ever met has collected over gods knows how many years. They think differently than any other living thing - see differently.

It's something in the way they move, the way they speak to each other - oh yes, you can hear them talking. You'll pick it up in your comms link, that's how you'll know they've turned their attention to you. They don't care about trying to scare you, but something about how calmly they do their business is terrifying regardless. Their motion is so smooth, the coordination of their attacks so seamless, it's like music. They don't hit you as much as they wash over you, an effeverscent stream of fire that disassembles the ship around you, and then you.

Yeah yeah, I know what you're thinking. Everyone hears stories about hotshot pilots who go diving into hives and come out loaded with riches. I suspect most of those riches were pilfered from the wrecks of ships who got too close, or taken from lesser hives and just embellished to sound impressive at one of the many dives dotting the deep Frontier. I can guarantee you - the pilots who contest with Golem-class swarms don't come back in one piece. The ones who contest with Tiamat-class swarms just don't come back. 

How do I know? Friend, I wish I didn't. I once took a fleet into a nest near an old Exclaver weapons depot. Thirty-six vessel raiding fleet went in and woke up the Golem-class swarm we didn't realize was still sleeping there. One ship came back - mine. 

My advice to you: if you ever encounter a swarm, a proper swarm, just make sure you're faster than the other guy.
