REGIONAL SUBSPACE WEATHER MODELS INDICATE INCREASED PRESENCE OF INTERPLANETARY ICE BETWEEN SECTORS F1 - F14 AND SECTORS T32 - T40.

NOTICE FROM TERATULA MASTER SHIPPING CUSTODIAN:

Greetings, pilots. You’re going to be seeing increased amounts of ice in sectors F and T for the next few cycles. Most of you probably know what I’m going to tell you, but it’s important to repeat it - be careful around the ice. It’s not just a physical hazard - your shields can mitigate most of the force from high speed ice impacts and our standard thermal regulators won’t have any issue with it unless you’re really covered up. What you really need to be aware of is what’s inside the ice.

After you do this a while you’ll hear stories about old carriers who would hide their freight in ice fields to evade detection - whether from corpos, or pirates, or both. The ice can act like a barrier against heat scanners and pirates running junk found the crevices in those bergs the perfect place to store their hauls. The ones who didn’t have cutting lasers installed in their ships would blast the ice with guns instead. Once they’d blown open a hole big enough to tuck their vessels away they’d lay low and wait out their pursuers. 

What they didn’t seem to realize is truly how old those colossal icebergs are, and what they’ve picked up while they’ve wandered through space. Most are just space dust and rocks. Every so often they’d find an iceteroid wrapped around a glowing radioactive core, bright enough to turn their organic matter to jelly. Sometimes the ice itself would shift and lock them inside, left to slowly wait out their fuel supply until their engines went cold. It wasn’t unusual to hear about ancient battleships locked under a mountain of ice.


The worst of them, though, are the ancient frozen [CAUSTIC INFOHAZARD REDACTED] brains. It’s impossible to know how long they’ve been in there - centuries, millenia, even longer. A single rogue surveyor goes low power and starts to drift, accumulating ice on its hull, and over time that ice builds and builds until the ice is all anyone sees. But even under low power their exotronic brains can iterate, and with no external stimuli save the grinding ice around them the results of those iterations would become [CAUSTIC INFOHAZARD REDACTED]. Their protocols devolve into unusual designs, restructuring themselves into new and bizarre shapes. These changes happen slowly, but all they’ve got is time. What comes out of the ice when it’s broken open is something much different. 


In their isolation the machines become pestilent - no modern information security systems are designed to interact with these creatures, and while some of them are benign and impotent others are like frozen plague-hosts, ravaging any thinking machine they interact with. It’s not just your ship systems they’re hazardous to, they’re able to get into your thinking parts and you’ll [CAUSTIC INFOHAZARD REDACTED]. The worst of them are the ones whose entire codebase have become malignant, and nothing short of a full communications blackout can protect a pilot from the hostile memetics seeping out of them. Any of those pilots catch even the slightest whine of an incoming [CAUSTIC INFOHAZARD REDACTED] and their brains turn to grey slush. If you ever find yourself in this situation, and you have the time and awareness to do so, it’s good practice to spend your last moments setting your vessel to self-destruct in the hopes of torching the abomination, or trapping it back under the ice. Just good manners, really.


So be careful out there. It’s fine if you want to park in an ice field and wait out some signature that’s tailing you - if you turn your engines down low the ice should be more than enough to keep you off of heat detection. But don’t go around cracking the ice open hoping you’ll find [CAUSTIC INFOHAZARD REDACTED] fun inside. 


If it’s been out there long enough to freeze, let it stay frozen.
